The Institute for Women’s Leadership is one of the 17 initiatives in Learn to Thrive: Strategic Plan 2022, and is also one of our early success stories. While the work of the institute is just beginning, its creation—staffing, structure, and the seed funding from special item appropriations by the legislature and private donors—is complete per the initial scope.
Some of our accomplishments for the institute as a whole include the formation of an advisory council comprised of influential women across the state, securing of donor-funding for a future speaker series, and the organizing of events to celebrate historical achievements of women.
The institute’s three centers each focus on a distinctive area of leadership:
The Center for Student Leadership adopted, through cross-university development, a unified vision of leadership to guide student development opportunities. Our vision will further prepare TWU students to be leaders through workshops, seminars, national conferences, and community service. Center director and institute executive director: Maj. Gen. Mary Saunders (ret.)
The Center for Women in Business provides the tools for women entrepreneurs across the state to achieve success, including training, funding, advising, and networking opportunities. Pamela Gilland’s microgrant is an example of the impact that Chancellor Feyten shared in her inaugural Boldly Go newsletter. Director: Shannon Mantaro
The Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy champions women for leadership positions in public service and related research. We are leading some innovative new programming in the state like our political boot camp for women and "Elect Her." In early 2020, we will open a groundbreaking digital, interactive history exhibition in Old Main, one of the first in Texas and the United States. Building on our faculty’s expertise and existing resources, we will showcase the contributions and leadership legacy of Texas women. Director: Nancy Bocskor
