What is a first-generation college student, and why should colleges and universities work to adequately support their success? Learn the answers to these questions and more at “Removing Academic Barriers to support First Generation College Student Success,” a presentation by Alecea Standlee (Gettysburg College), 2:30-4 p.m., Monday, Nov. 15. The presentation will be delivered via Zoom, and advance registration is requested. An in-person option is available in the Center for Faculty Excellence Seminar Room (Stoddard Hall 308, Denton campus). Attendance will be limited to 15 people, and coffee, tea, and snacks will be available. These seats must be reserved.
Colleges and universities across the nation are facing a decline in the growth among traditional college-going populations and will need to recruit and retain students from populations that historically have had lower college-going rates. Many of these students will be the first in their family to attend college, and they will have unique needs.
The presentation will be hosted by the Center for Faculty Excellence in collaboration with Student Enrichment, Health and Support in the Division of Student Life. There will be time at the end of the presentation to discuss the specific needs of TWU faculty and how they may create classrooms that better support all students.
