Mural dedication set for Sept. 12

A mural created by visual arts students that depicts campus imagery and celebrates TWU’s values and ideas will be formally dedicated at a special ceremony this month.

The ribbon-cutting event will be at noon Sept. 12 in the breezeway of Texas Woman’s Administration Conference Tower (ACT), where the mural was completed last fall.

The mural was the second major outdoor project produced by students in Visual Arts professor Giovanni Valderas’ class.

In 2022, the university unveiled its first outdoor mural, inaugurating the Thriving Legacies mural project—a living archive of imagination, resilience and shared history. Conceived as a series of works across the Denton campus, the initiative honors the university’s past while inspiring generations to come. The initial mural, titled Your Dream, Your Legacy, covers the north-facing wall of the former Human Resources building at Third and Oakland streets.

The second mural, Dreams Pieced Together, Radiant Forever, was made possible through the support of the university’s Learn to Thrive: Strategic Plan 2022 committee. The committee’s vision earned Texas Woman’s the 2023 American Council on Education and Fidelity Investments Award for Institutional Transformation.

The mural stands as a lasting tribute to the faculty and staff whose dedication propelled that recognition, and to the collaborative spirit of Texas Woman’s students and its broader community, Valderas said.

Future murals will continue to be imagined and painted by students, weaving their personal stories, challenges and aspirations into the fabric of the university’s environment. Sustained support from the Dorothy Antoinette LaSelle Foundation ensures that vision will evolve and endure. The project also honors the legacy of Dorothy “Toni” LaSelle, an educator, artist and trailblazer whose spirit continues to animate the university’s creative journey.
