Inaugural art series exhibition opens

“Intersections,” the inaugural Visual Culture: REPRESENT! Series juried exhibition, will be open Monday, Oct. 4, through Friday, Nov. 5, in the TWU East and West galleries. An opening reception and curatorial talk will take place 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 7.

“Intersections” is an open call exhibition juried by John Spriggins, general manager at the South Dallas Cultural Center.

The first of its kind, the Visual Culture: REPRESENT! Series opens up the opportunity to explore work that moves within and beyond the traditional boundaries of art history to construct a broader sense of how imagery communicates sociocultural ideas. The exhibition focuses on the concept of “intersections,” including contradiction or conflict, internal or external meeting points, unexpected clashes or chance encounters, and more.

Meant to showcase the Visual Arts Division’s new art history and visual culture focus, the series’ mission puts into practice the M.A. in art (concentration in art history & visual culture) program’s and the division’s commitment to interdisciplinary, diversity, inclusion, and social justice advocacy. In emphasizing the need to REPRESENT, the series reflects the program’s enthusiasm for the role of visual art in activism and its ability to be a platform for underrepresented voices.
