  • Carolyn DaSilva (physical therapy) has been awarded a grant from the Texas Physical Therapy Foundation for a study titled “Falls and Fear of Falling in Adults Who Require Wheelchairs for Locomotion.” In addition, DaSilva has been named as a co-investigator for a study titled “Self-Directed Planning for Long-Term Services and Supports and Care Coordination by Individuals who have Experienced Poliomyelitis or Other Mobility Disabilities” that has been awarded a grant by TIRR Memorial Hermann Independent Living Research Utilization.
  • School of Physical Therapy faculty members Katy Mitchell, Jennifer Ellison and Peggy Gleeson have had their paper, “Current Practices and Perceptions of Admission Criteria at Physical Therapist Education Programs in the United States,” accepted for publication by the Journal of Physical Therapy Education.
  • TWU Houston’s School of Occupational Therapy was well-represented at the Texas Occupational Therapy Association state conference Nov. 2-4 in Sugar Land. Making presentations at the conference were Josephine ChanPei-Fen ChangO. Jayne Bowman and Francie Baxter with Judy Skarbek.
  • Under the leadership of Leslie Nelson and Wyona Freysteinson, the College of Nursing and Beta Beta-Houston co-hosted an inaugural Founders Day Celebration Friday, Nov. 2. The theme was Celebrating the Art and Science of Nursing and consisted of two plenary speakers, with 14 break-out podium sessions and 12 poster presentations by TWU students, faculty and community partners. Participants were treated to breakfast, a silent auction and the opportunity to donate to TWU community projects.
  • The Houston Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Office of Research will host a workshop from 12-2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 in IHSH 3121. This workshop will focus on dual IRBs, IAAs, status of online platform, and update on revised common rule. Any remaining time will be used to answer questions about the IRB process or personal IRB studies. The workshop is open to all faculty, students or staff who are interested in research involving human subjects. For information, contact Madhura Maiya (research).
