FYC Essay Contest recognizes students, sponsors

The 2020 First Year-Composition (FYC) Essay Contest has come to a close, and the results are in.

Thanks to the generosity of alumni donations, the annual contest provides more than $1,000 to deserving undergraduate writers enrolled in FYC classes (English 1013 and 1023) at Texas Woman’s.

Student entries are sponsored by members of the English faculty or graduate teaching assistants. This year’s winners of The TWU Alumni Writing Awards for First-Year Composition Contest were:

  • First place overall for an English 1013 essay ($300) — Amira Gemeny, sponsored by JennahRose English
  • Second place overall for an English 1013 essay ($200) — Corrie Earthman, sponsored by Liam Lanigan
  • First place overall for an English 1023 essay ($300) — Xurong Watson, sponsored by Jacquelyn Hoermann-Elliott
  • Second place overall for an English 1023 essay: ($200) — Justine Shelton sponsored by Amy Griswold

Six up-and-coming student authors recognized with Emerging Writers Awards were:

  • Isabella Rubio, sponsored by Nathan King
  • Hannah Womac, sponsored by Margaret Williams
  • Hunter Hall, sponsored by Jacquelyn Hoermann-Elliott
  • Aidan Mize, sponsored by JennahRose English
  • Jenna Hartjen, sponsored by Alexis Kopp
  • Valentina Vanegas, sponsored by Allyson Hibdon

The FYC Contest awards committee consisted of graduate student contest chair Margaret Williams and graduate student judges Jason Parker and Desiree Thorpe.

Over the course of the past academic year, Texas Woman’s FYC Program offered 107 sections and served 2,509 students. The program works with a team of 34 instructors, which includes graduate teaching assistants, adjuncts, dual enrollment teachers, and full-time faculty members.
