  • TWU and the Denton Independent School District are hosting Camp ABILITIES — a weeklong overnight sports camp for students who are blind, visually impaired or deaf-blind — July 8-14 on the TWU Denton campus. Sports include Beep Baseball, Goal Ball, tandem biking, gymnastics, track and field, swimming and fitness training. For more information, contact Lisa Silliman-French.
  • Teacher Education is expecting record numbers for its fifth annual New Teacher Academy, scheduled Tuesday, July 17 in the ACT Building. The daylong workshop is designed to provide an extra measure of support for recent grads in the first three years of their teaching careers. More than 100 new teachers from throughout North Texas will attend sessions on classroom management strategies, preparing for the first week, exploring graduate school, and more.   • Suzanne Townsdin (library) was recognized as a finalist at the June 29 North Central Texas Council of Governments’ 2018 Employee of the Year Award Luncheon. Townsdin was honored for her work promoting biking and commuting as a TWU employee. She is an avid bike commuter and a member of the Built Environment theme that is part of the larger Health and Wellbeing Initiative at TWU.
  • Celia Lo (sociology) presented at the 16th International Symposium of the World Society of Victimology June 10-14 in Hong Kong with graduate teaching assistant Heather M. Gerling, TWU sociology alumnus William Ash-Houchen, and Tyrone C. Cheng (Montclair State University). Presentations were titled “From Childhood Victim to Adult Criminal: Examining Racial/Ethnic Differences in victimization – Offending Patterns among American Young Adults,” and “From Childhood Victim to Adult Criminal: The Role of Gender.”
  • Richard Sheardy (chemistry and biochemistry) participated in a panel discussion at the 2018 Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement meeting June 6-9 in Anaheim, California. The panel discussed “Civic Learning in the Major: Devising a Collective Departmental Civic Design.” Read more.
  • Ellina Grigorieva’s (mathematics) new book, “Methods of Solving Number Theory Problems” recently was published by Springer. Her article, “Optimal control for an SEIR epidemic model with nonlinear incidence rate,” has been accepted for publication in Studies in Applied Mathematics.
  • Agatha Beins’ (multicultural women’s and gender studies) book, “Liberation in Print: Feminist Periodicals and Social Movement Identity,” was featured in the Spring 2018 Schlesinger Library Newsletter (see page 5).
