  • Theatre and movie buffs can have their pick Wednesday, Oct. 16, as two shows take place on the Denton campus. The Texas Woman’s Theatre Program opens its season with William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth at 8 p.m. in the Redbud Theater Complex. The play runs through Sunday, Oct. 20. Tickets, which may be purchased online, are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Saturday’s showing is on a pay-what-you-can basis. On the opposite end of campus, a screening of the film “Phoenix, Oregon,” will begin at 7 p.m. in the Margo Jones Performance Hall. All tickets are $5. One of the film’s stars, Jesse Borrego, will be in Denton for a Q&A immediately following the screening.
  • All qualifying faculty, staff and students are invited to grab some fresh fruits and veggies from the North Texas Food Bank Mobile Pantry 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Thursday, Oct.17, in the Jones Hall parking lot.
  • Jennifer Youngs (music) & Friends will present a faculty voice recital at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, in the Margo Jones Performance Hall. Admission is free.
  • Reminder: Texas Woman’s University is an early voting site in Denton County for the upcoming November election. Registered voters may cast their ballot in Student Union room 113 during the early voting period, which begins Monday, Oct. 21, and continues through Friday, Nov. 1.
  • Walgreen’s will host an on-site flu shot clinic 8 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday, Oct. 21, in the Human Resources Office lobby, located on the second floor of the Oakland Complex. There is no charge for members covered by HealthSelect of Texas or Consumer Directed HealthSelect plans. Be sure to bring your medical insurance card and picture identification.   • The Employee Retirement System of Texas will provide a Wellbeing Mindfulness Presentation Thursday, Oct. 24, in the Office of Human Resources conference room, located on the second floor of the Oakland Complex. Sessions are available at 10 a.m. and noon. The 60-minute workshop will introduce the science and practical application of mindfulness. Registration is required.

  • Jonathan Olsen (history and political science) was an invited guest speaker Oct. 8 for the University of Pittsburg's European Studies Center event, "Germany Since 1989: Do Differences Persist After Reunification?,” part of the "Conversations on Europe" lecture series. Olsen also presented his recent research on German state elections at the German Studies Association annual conference in Portland, Oregon, in early October.
  • Shann Hwa (Abraham) Hwang (family studies) has been invited to contribute a book chapter on Asian American families for the second edition of “Family Life Education with Diverse Population,” to be published by Cognella Publishing. Hwang also had a paper, “Exploring Parenting Influences: Married African American Fathers’ Perspectives,” accepted for publication in The Qualitative Report. The manuscript is a collaborative work with former doctoral student Felicia Murray.
  • Aimee Myers (teacher education) recently published an article, “Bringing Together a Harmony of Voices: Using the Inside-Out Strategy as a Culturally Responsive Approach to Intertwine Knowledge from Self, Peer, and Text,” published in English in Texas.
  • Congratulations to Parker Ackerman (nutrition & food science GTA), who finished 26.91 miles in a little more than four hours in the Oct. 13 Chicago Marathon.
