  • The TWU Department of English, Speech and Foreign Languages is raising funds for an endowed scholarship or award in memory of Katie McWain. All donations made through the TWU Foundation will go toward the Katie McWain Memorial Fund. The department pays tribute to their colleague in an In Memorium message on the ESFL website. The Photographic Arts Coalition and the Visual Arts Department will hold a gathering in McWain's memory 9-11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, in room 301 of the Fine Arts Building. Faculty, staff and students are invited to make photogrphic lumen prints in honor of McWain. Paper will be provided.
  • TWU Athletics will host the first Maroon & White Luncheon of the semester at noon, Wednesday, Sept. 25, at a NEW location — Rudy’s BBQ, 520 South I-35E Frontage Road in Denton. Come and get a “Pioneer Special” — barbecue sandwich or baked potato, side and drink — for $10, and hear the latest news and updates on the university’s athletics teams.
  • It’s here! The TWU ice cream, Pioneer Pomegranate, is available at Beth Marie’s on the Square. Cool down with a scoop or two while supporting the university’s G-Force. Mentors from G-Force will serve ice cream 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25, in Beth Marie’s downtown Denton store, with 30% of the proceeds during that time going to the G-Force organization. The Pioneer Pomegranate ice cream is available while supplies last.
  • Annual Ally Training, sponsored by TWU Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will take place 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4, in Student Union 207. Space is limited, and the deadline to register is Sept. 27. The TWU Ally Program is an elective and interactive workshop held each semester to provide support to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual/agender students, faculty and staff. Register for the training in the CAPS office in West Jones Hall or call x3801.
  • The TWU Student Union is selling discount tickets to the State Fair of Texas, which runs Sept. 27-Oct. 20. General admission tickets are $13 and will be sold online. Don’t want to drive? The Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) offers a ticket combo and online planning tool kit. The ticket combo deal offers a free DCTA and DART local day pass with the purchase of a $16.50 State Fair ticket.
  • Amanda Zerangue (libraries) has been recognized for her work with OER (Open Educational Resources) by SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), a global coalition committed to making Open the default for research and education. Zerangue currently is featured on the organization’s website as an Open Education Leadership Fellow.
  • A special symposium was held this summer in recognition of Richard D. Sheardy’s research contributions to the scientific community during the Calorimetry Conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The symposium included remarks from esteemed collaborators, colleagues, current and past undergraduate and graduate students who worked with Sheardy over the years at both Seton Hall University and TWU.
  • AnaLouise Keating (multicultural women’s and gender studies) will present a lecture, “Towards a Theory-Practice of Queer Conocimiento: AnzaldĂșan Insights for Transformation,” Monday, Sept. 30, at the University of Arkansas.
  • Shannon Mantaro (Center for Women Entrepreneurs) wrote a column on Women’s Small Business Month that was published in the Sept. 18 Denton Record-Chronicle.
