Several Texas Woman’s University departments teamed up for a camp aimed not only at preparing high school girls for college, but also helping them understand their own personal value.
TWU’s Denton campus hosted Fit2Lead, a leadership and wellness camp, June 21-24. A total of 23 juniors and seniors from three high schools in the Young Women’s Preparatory Network (YWPN) attended the camp. Schools represented were Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School Dallas, Margaret TALKINGTON School For Young Women Leaders Lubbock, and Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy Houston.
“The camp also focuses on understanding the importance of mental and physical wellness and how that affects our ability to be successful leaders in our community,” said Tanisha Johnson, director of Dual Enrollment Programs in the Office of Curriculum and Strategic Initiatives.
Camp activities included a student leadership panel lunch with TWU students, and sessions on mindful eating, college success, creating a resume as a high school student, mental health, and more. Team bonding activities included rock climbing, tote bag painting, and Zumba.
In a survey at the end of the camp, participants noted that the resume building workshop and the TWU student-led leadership panel were the most informative, Johnson said.
