Transitioning to user-based Adobe Acrobat licensing

Effective May, Texas Woman’s University will shift from a campus-wide Adobe Acrobat license to a user-based licensing model. This change is part of a broader effort to better align software usage with individual needs and ensure responsible use of university resources.

What’s Changing?

  • Acrobat Reader (Free): Available to all users for viewing, printing, digital signing, and basic commenting on PDFs.
  • Full Adobe Acrobat ($130 per user): Reserved for faculty and staff who require advanced features such as PDF editing, form creation, and file format conversions.

Why the Change?

  • Improved resource management: Most users only require basic functionality. This transition ensures that full licenses are assigned based on demonstrated need.
  • Better compliance & security: A user-based model simplifies license tracking and strengthens adherence to security and licensing standards.
  • Streamlined IT support: Centralized management allows for more efficient installations and updates.

Need Full Acrobat?
Consider using the alternative tools and workarounds to meet your PDF needs without the cost of a full Acrobat Pro license. Faculty and staff who require the full version of Adobe Acrobat can request a license through the Technology Service Desk by emailing servicedesk@twu.edu. Requests will be evaluated based on demonstrated need and may be subject to departmental limits. Departments may also choose to purchase additional licenses at their own discretion.
