Data Privacy Week (Jan. 24-28) is focused on spreading awareness about online privacy and educating citizens on how to manage their personal information and keep it secure.
Everyone has a part to play in their data security and privacy, and Texas Woman's University is a proud champion that supports the principle that all Pioneers and organizations share the responsibility of being conscientious stewards of personal information. Quick tips to manage your data privacy include:
- Understand the privacy/convenience tradeoff — Make informed decisions about whether or not to share your data with certain businesses by considering the amount of personal information they are asking for and weighing it against the benefits you may receive in return. Be thoughtful about who gets that information and wary of apps or services that require access to information that is not required or relevant for the services they are offering.
- Manage your privacy — Check the privacy and security settings on web services and apps and set them to your comfort level for information sharing. Limit application access to features such as geolocation/location data, contacts information, microphone, and camera/video.
- Protect your data — Use long, unique passwords for each account and enable multi-factor authentication for all accounts that offer it.
