Stay in shape despite summertime heat

Ah, summertime in Texas! The heat can be intense – sometimes dangerously so – but you still want to stay in shape. (Working up a sweat just by walking across the parking lot doesn’t count.)

So, what can you do?

Texas Woman’s Fitness & Recreation Center offers both in-person and group workout sessions during the summer. Group X classes recently began and are going well, according to fitness programs supervisor Matthew Arnold. The in-person classes – ranging from yoga to cycling to T’ai Chi and more – are open on a first-come, first served basis and are free for those with a Fit & Rec membership. Space is limited, though, so you may need to show up early to get a spot.

While in-person sessions offer a social aspect to the physical benefits of exercise, it may not be an option for some. Fit & Rec has that covered, with a growing library of on-demand, virtual Group X classes free to the public. You can follow Fit & Rec instructors through chair yoga, Pilates, cardio intervals and more from the air-conditioned comfort of your home or office.

You also can follow the Fit & Rec Facebook Page for all virtual group exercise classes. All virtual options on the Group X schedule can be found on the Fit & Rec YouTube page or posted on its Facebook page at the designated time on the schedule.
