Texas Woman's University faculty and staff extend the prestige and reputation of the university through their presentations at international, national and regional conferences. Here is a sampling of their work reported July-September 2023.

Biology
Catalina Pislariu, PhD (Denton) presented an invited talk at the International Plant & Animal Genome Conference, held Sept. 20-22 in Perth, WA, Australia. In her talk, “Below-ground peace talks in the Medicago truncatula - Sinorhizobium nitrogen fixing symbiosis,” she featured research by her current graduate student Hala Samara; lab alumna Gomati Pant, who graduated in December 2022; and undergraduate student Megan Elenburg.
Camelia Maier, PhD, and Diana Elrod, PhD (both Denton) presented “Sustainability Education and Civic Engagement Collaborations at Restored Pollinator Habitats on Texas Woman’s University Campus” at the Oxford International Roundtable on Environment and Climate Change, held July 16-20 in Oxford, England.
Mafia Mahabub Rumpa (PhD candidate), Anjola Ifagbavi-Adeniran (undergraduate), and Camelia Maier, PhD (all Denton) presented “Building a Seed Database for Texas Native Plant Conservation” at the Texas Plant Conservation Conference held Aug. 14-15 in Fort Worth.
Laura Hanson, PhD (Denton) gave an invited seminar, titled “Cytomegalovirus: What is it and why should I care?,” at Michigan State University.
Business
Several College of Business faculty (all Denton) conducted panel presentations at the ISM/MBAAI Fall Educators’ Conference, held Sept. 10-12 in Nashville: Rama Yelkur, PhD, and David Rylander, PhD, presented “Societal Impact of Pedagogy: Ideas and Innovations; Pushkala Raman, PhD, and Rylander presented “Effective Virtual Teams;” Raman and Jennifer Flanagan, PhD, presented “Enhancing Engagement in an Online Environment;” Lee Brown, PhD, presented “Generative AI: Fears and Hopes;” Andrea Bennett,PhD, presented on “Using Free and Open-Access Resources in the Business Classroom (F2F and Online);” and Pam Baker, PhD, presented “Education Today for the Workforce of the Future.”
Jason Lambert, PhD (Denton) presented a professional development workshop, “Shedding Light on the ‘Invisible Minority’: The Status of Research on Foreign-Born Workers in the U.S.,” at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting, held Aug. 8 in Boston.
Center for Women Entrepreneurs
Tracy Irby (Denton) has been selected to present at the 2023 Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers (GEC) conference, scheduled Oct. 5-7 at the University of Texas at Dallas. Her presentation is titled “Duplicating an Accelerator Program: Best Practices from the AccelerateHER Program,” and was selected from more than 230 submissions.
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Richard Sheardy, PhD (Denton) co-organized the session “Bio-Materials – Food & Pharmaceuticals,” and presented his research as an invited speaker at the 24th IUPAC International Conference on Chemical Thermodynamics, held July 30-Aug. 4 in Osaka, Japan.
Dance
Juliana Azoubel (Graduate teaching assistant II, PhD candidate, Denton) shared part of her research at the National Dance Education Organization Conference, held Sept. 29-Oct. 1 in Denver. Azoubel taught two movement workshops and presented on dance, women’s leadership, and community, part of the research she has been developing at TWU. Azoubel’s participation in the conference was funded by the Center for Student Research Presentation Grant Program.
Human Development, Family Studies, and Counseling
Brigitte Vittrup, PhD (Denton) presented at a symposium session titled “Dispelling myths about teaching diversity to children with psychological science” at APA 2023, the American Psychological Association’s annual convention, held Aug. 3-5 in Washington, DC.
Library and Information Studies
Gretchen Hoffman, PhD (Denton) presented at the Texas Council of Academic Libraries (TCAL) conference, held Sept. 18 in College Station.
Ling Hwey Jeng (Denton) designed and presented a series of four workshops on “Building Successful Collaborations with Communities,” sponsored by Network of National Library of Medicine, Region 4. The workshops were held online June 16-July 20.
Ling Hwey Jeng, PhD (Denton) was an invited speaker of the Association of Library Services for Children Presidential Program at the American Library Association 2023 Annual Conference, held June 22-27 in Chicago. Her presentation was titled “Leading with Your Hands and Your Heart: A Conversation about Leading from Wherever You Are.”
Nursing
Wyona Freysteinson, PhD (Nursing, Houston) chaired the “Health and Mirrors” session in the 5th International Virtual Mirror Conference held Sept. 6-8.
Catherine Mbango, PhD (Houston) gave a presentation, “Breast Cancer Knowledge and Barriers to Screening Among Women in Rural Western Kenya,” at Sigma’s 34th International Nursing Research Congress, held July 20-23 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Vi Ho, PhD, Tri Pham, PhD (adjunct), and Anh Le (PhD student) (all Houston) gave a podium presentation at the International Council of Nurses Congress held July 1-5 in Montreal. The trio presented the results of their project examining the effectiveness of an annual multidisciplinary community health fair in the Vietnamese American population in Houston and vicinity.
Student Money Management Center
Chalese Connors (Denton) and Paul Goebel collaborated on two presentations at the 2023 Higher Education Financial Wellness Alliance Summit held July 16-18 in Eugene, Oregon. Their sessions were titled “To Certify or Not To Certify: Is Professional Certification Right for You and Your Team?” and “The Secrets to Building A Successful Financial Wellness Program Team.” Gabrielle Pringle Onwunaka (Denton) and Stephen Lewis presented a session, “Not Everyone Speaks Your Language: Understanding and Utilizing Cross-Culturalism.”
