Sandra Nasr (nursing adjunct, Dallas) recently provided a refresher course in giving injections for nurses in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District (CFB ISD). Forty school district nurses took part in the training, which took place March 26 in the CFB ISD multipurpose building.
Sandra Lieck, director of health services for the school district, noted that vaccine administration by injections has not been a daily activity for school nurses. This year, however, CFB ISD became a provider for the Texas Vaccine for Children Program, which enables the district to provide free vaccines for students. The district’s nurses also will administer COVID-19 vaccines to interested staff.
Lieck noted that Nasr and CFB ISD have a longstanding relationship — TWU nursing students perform their community health clinical rotation by working alongside CFB nurses in the school health office. Nursing students are placed with CFB nurses to learn how to triage, assess, and provide direct care and teaching to CFB students regarding health issues. TWU nursing students have the opportunity to learn how to perform vision, hearing, and spinal screenings.
“it is an honor to give back to CFB for the nurses that have given their time to teach TWU student nurses,” Nasr said.
