In memoriam: Billie Askew

The TWU Community offers its condolences to the family and friends of Billie Askew (literacy & learning), who passed away Sept. 28, 2021. Askew was a retired professor of reading and a Cornaro Award winner. She was instrumental in bringing Reading Recovery to TWU and expanding the university’s presence across North America and internationally. Under her leadership, TWU built school-university partnerships with more than 50 school districts in a dozen states. Askew served as past president of the Reading Recovery Council of North America and the North American Reading Recovery Trainers Group. She also represented the United States on the Board of the International Reading Recovery Trainers Organization. Her impact on literacy continues to grow with the annual Billie J. Askew Reading Recovery and K-6 Literacy Institute held every fall.
