Biology

 

Ann Davis, PhD, presented "Keep It Simple: Teaching Students to Talk Science Without Jargon" at the National Science Teaching Association conference in Denver, Colo., on March 20-23.

 

Tina L. Gumienny, PhD, presented two posters, "Learning genetics by “making a baby” with a deck of cards for majors or non-majors courses" and "Molecular and genetic interactions between the DBL-1/BMP signaling pathway and BLMP-1/BLIMP1 regulate organismal traits" at The Allied Genetics Conference in National Harbor, Md., March  6–10.

 

Tina L. Gumienny, PhD, presented the poster "Molecular and genetic interactions between the DBL-1/BMP signaling pathway and BLMP-1/BLIMP1 regulate organismal traits" at the 51st Annual Meeting of the Texas Genetics Society in College Station, Texas, March 21–23. 

 

Camelia Maier, PhD, presented "TWU Pollinator Gardens as Significant Sources for Students' Microscopy Projects" at the Texas Society for Microscopy annual conference on February 23-24 in San Marcos, Texas.

 

Ann Davis, PhD, presented "Where Are They? Finding Pre-Health Students When There's No Required Major" at the annual conference of the Texas Association of Advisors for the Health Professions in El Paso, Texas, on Feb. 29, 2024.

 

Housing & Dining

 

Meredith Maddox, Associate Director, CARE & Beth Eppinger, Assistant Director, Housing & Dining presented at the Southwest Association of College and University Housing Officers (SWACUHO) annual conference on Feb. 19. "The Magic Middle" presentation focused on the forgotten mid-level professional in student affairs.

Angela Rodriguez Mooney, PhD, presented her paper “Beyond the Struggle: Representation of Trans Joy in Paloma” at the Modern Language Association Convention (2024 MLA) in Philadelphia on Jan. 6, 2024.

 

Library & Information Studies

Lin Moore, PhD, and Peggy Lisenbee, PhD, with the assistance of Stacie Summers, PhD, presented a session entitled "Playing with STEM: Creativity, Collaboration, and Problem Solving with Young Children in Brazil" at the 2024 Transformative Learning Conference at the University of Central Oklahoma. 

 

Lin Moore, PhDStacie Summers, PhD and Sandra Morales, PhD, presented "What You Need to Know about Childhood Trauma" at the Texas Association for Administrators and Supervisors of Programs for Young Children Symposium in San Antonio, Texas. 

 

Lin Moore, PhD and Sandra Morales, PhD, presented a workshop entitled "Using Children's Books to Support Diversity in Our Classrooms" at the 75th Southern Early Childhood Association Conference in Atlanta, Ga.

 

Peggy Lisenbee (Literacy & Learning) co-presented with PhD students Kenya Burts and Raegan Francis on Celebrating and Representing Differences Through the Use of Multicultural Activities and Books at the Austin Chapter of TXAEYC Conference on Feb. 24, 2024. 

 

Lin Moore, PhD, and Dr. Magda Lorean Ponce presented "An Examination of the Vocabulary Development of Children Who Are Dual Language Learners with a Focus on the Language Environment and Literacy Practices in Preschool Classrooms" at the National Association of African American Studies & Affiliates Joint National Conference at the University of Texas at Austin.  An additional presentation was entitled "True Reflections: Exploring Images of Black Girls in Children's Books."

 

Nursing

 

Judith McFarlane, DrPH, presented "Challenges of conducting longitudinal research for DV shelter users and Strategies for Success" at the first meeting of the Domestic Violence (DV) Research Network in Helsinki, Finland on March 12. 

 

Angeles Nava, PhD, presented "Migrants’ participation in research and strategies for success" at the first meeting of the Domestic Violence (DV) Research Network in Helsinki, Finland on March 12.

 

Bethany Fijan presented at the 2024 Texas State of Reform Health Policy Conference in Austin, Texas, alongside State Senator Donna Campbell, Serena Bumpus (President, TX Nurses Association), and Cameron Duncan (VP Advocacy and Public Policy, TX Hospital Association) on the topic of healthcare workplace violence.

 

Ann Malecha, PhD (Houston). Sandra Cesario, PhD (Houston), & Mikyoung Lee, PhD (Dallas), presented a poster titled “Innovative Assessment: Doctoral Nursing Student Success through Scholarly Portfolios” at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Doctoral Education Conference on Jan. 19.

 

Physical Therapy

 

Carolyn Da Silva, PhD, presented "Postpolio syndrome with Carolyn Da Silva" on Jan. 3 on the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy's Degenerative Disease Special Interest Group Rare Conditions podcast episode 46.

 

Reading Recovery

 

Annette Torres Elías, PhD, who serves as the Policy Makers SIG Co-Chair of the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE), presented on Achieving an Equitable Education In and Beyond the Classroom for Bilingual Students: What are the issues for local leaders and policy makers.

 

Annette Torres Elías, PhD, and a colleague also presented Descubriendo la Lectura: Highly Effective Early Literacy Intervention at the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE).

 

Teacher Education

 

Jerry Burkett, EdD, presented “Ineffective School Leadership: Teachers Weigh In; Next-Level Leadership: Preparing Assistant Principals for Campus Leadership ” at the 2024 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in Philadelphia April 11-14. 

 

Maria Peterson, PhD, made two presentations at the National Association of School/University Partnerships: “Collaborative Conversations: Pre-Service Teachers” and “Leaning Into University and P-12 Collaboration: What Can We Learn from the ‘Magic’ of Novice Teacher Voices?” 

 

Jerry Burkett, EdD, made a presentation entitled “Podcasting Professor: Using Podcasts for Engaging, Concise, and Creative Teaching” at the 2024 Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education (SITE) Conference.


Jerry Burkett, EdD, and Aimee Myers, PhD, made a presentation entitled “Pushing Diversity Where it is Not Wanted: How to Change Minds that Don’t Want to Change.” at the 2024 Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education (SITE) Conference.


Amanda Hurlbut, PhD, and Karen Dunlap, EdD, presented a roundtable at the 2024 Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education (SITE) Conference entitled “Illuminating Skills through EdTech Mastery: How ISTE Certification Can Facilitate Meaningful Curriculum Revision for EPPs.”

 

Gina Anderson, EdD, Karen Dunlap EdD, Becky Fredrickson, EdD, and Sarah McMahan, PhD, joined with colleagues from Sam Houston State University to present “Residencies, Partnerships, and Pathways” at the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) Conference.

 

Ludovic Sourdot, PhD, collaborated with a colleague on a presentation at the Popular Culture Association meeting in Chicago. Their presentation was entitled, "’It's a calling. You answered.’: The Strong Black Woman As Savior Teacher in Abbott Elementary.”

 

Gina Anderson, EdD and Randa Keeley, PhD delivered a compelling presentation showcasing their dedication to advocacy at the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE) annual meeting.

 

Maria Peterson-Ahmad, PhD presented insightful perspectives, reaffirming TWU's commitment to innovation and collaboration in the field of education by focusing on reducing stress and burnout in teachers at the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE) annual meeting.

 

Minkowan Goo, PhD made a presentation entitled, “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence in Creating Personalized Social Stories for Students with Autism” at the 25th International Conference on Autism, Intellectual Disability & Developmental Disabilities (DADD) Jan. 17-19 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
