TWU SOTA hosts guest speaker from The Bachelorette

The TWU Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA), advised by Kristen Tucker, OTD, hosted Cam Ayala, a notable guest speaker from Season 15 of The Bachelorette.

"I am so grateful for Cam Ayala and individuals like him willing to come to the TWU campus and share their experiences with TWU students," Tucker said. "His visit, hosted by the TWU Houston Student Occupational Therapy Association, provided a unique opportunity for future healthcare professionals to gain valuable insights from the client perspective. I encourage the SOTA organization to continue providing inspiring guest speakers."

Ayala, who has become a prominent advocate for lymphedema awareness and amputee support, shared his powerful journey with occupational therapy and physical therapy students on the Houston campus. Ayala's presentation focused on his lifelong battle with lymphedema and his experience with limb loss and associated pain.

He offered valuable insights into the challenges he faces and the resilience developed throughout his medical journey. By sharing his personal story, Ayala provided students with a unique perspective on the impact of chronic conditions and disabilities on daily life and occupational performance.

Tucker explained that the event served as an excellent opportunity for future healthcare professionals to gain firsthand knowledge about the lived experiences of individuals with lymphedema, limb loss and chronic pain.
