ADA Title II rule ushers new era of digital accessibility

On April 24, 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice has finalized its ADA Title II rule, setting a new standard for digital accessibility across state and local government services. This landmark regulation ensures that individuals with disabilities have equal access to online programs, services, and activities.

What does this mean for TWU?

Under the rule, all digital services—including websites, learning management systems, mobile apps, and online documents—must meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards. These guidelines ensure that students, faculty, and staff with disabilities can fully participate in academic and campus life.

Deadlines to Watch:

  • April 24, 2026 is our deadline to comply with the new ADA Title II rule.

Why It Matters:

Accessibility is not just about compliance—it’s about creating an environment where every member of our community can thrive. Digital information that is accessible improves usability for all, strengthens public trust, and reflects our commitment to academic excellence.

What are we doing to comply:

  • Marketing Communication is conducting website audits to identify accessibility issues on websites and social media.
  • The Office of Faculty Commons is working to empower faculty members to create accessible course content, offering accessibility training and more!
  • The Digital Accessibility team is working with IT, Compliance, Librarians, Faculty Commons, Marketing Communications and others to incorporate digital accessibility best practices into workflows.
  • Various digital accessibility training is offered to staff and faculty.
  • The Digital Accessibility team regularly reviews and monitors progress being made in different departments.

Looking Ahead

Compliance is the starting point—not the finish line. By embedding accessibility into our culture and operations, we position our institution as a leader in education. Together, we can ensure that digital access is not just a mandate, but a mission.
