Winter storm repairs underway at Student Union

TWU’s Student Union at Hubbard Hall (SUHH) was one of the hardest hit buildings on the Denton campus when Winter Storm Uri struck the state in February. Repair work began earlier this month, with an expected completion date in September.

“Most of the damage was caused by busted fire sprinkler pipes and AC coils that leaked due to the freeze,” said Zachary Canales (facilities management). He noted that some spaces less impacted by water could be completed earlier, but added that flooring, sheetrock, ceilings and paint will need to be replaced in most spaces.

The bridge between SUHH and the Administration Conference Tower (ACT), which houses the Texas First Ladies Historic Costume Collection, also sustained damage from a broken water pipe. David Sweeten, director of the Student Union and Conference Services, said gowns that were on display currently are in climate-controlled storage. The collection is temporarily closed to visitors, though a virtual view of the gowns is available.
