TWU Police hosts sexual assault response team training

The TWU Police Department has a key role on the Denton County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and hosted local law enforcement agencies, advocates, health care providers and prosecutors on Feb. 8 to present the countywide SART protocol. It was established following the passing of Senate Bill 476.

Senate Bill 476 (87R) requires all Texas counties to form an adult SART to create a statewide infrastructure of resources, awareness, connection and coordination to address sex crimes locally. The legislation was put forward by then-state Sen. Jane Nelson and signed by Gov. Greg Abbott in 2021.

The Denton County SART is dedicated to enhancing the multidisciplinary response to sexual assaults. The goal is to comprehensively investigate sexual assault crimes and to promote healing and justice for survivors by creating an environment in Denton County where survivors of sexual assault are heard and healing is promoted, while perpetrators of those crimes are brought to justice.

TWU hosted 81 attendees from 36 agencies.
