Houston nursing students in Ann Malecha’s and Angeles Nava’s N4614 course, which focuses on community/public health nursing, participated in the 23rd Annual School Supply Distribution event sponsored by the Morales Memorial Foundation to support Greater Houston’s East End community. Twenty-five TWU nursing students took part in the Aug. 29 event, which saw cars lined up around the block more than an hour before the 9 a.m. event opened.
The students gained firsthand experience in helping to organize and load the cars and meet the many families who attended, while observing social distancing and wearing masks. The students will one day be leaders in health care and need to learn what it takes to organize and implement a community service project, Malecha said, adding, “The students really represented TWU in such a positive way to the community.”
More students will be going out into the community, Malecha said, noting that each of the 87 students in the class must participate in at least one service learning day.
