Nursing and Physical Therapy faculty on the Texas Woman’s Houston campus have created an interprofessional education (IPE) event focused on improving communication between nurses and physical therapists.
In the health professions, IPE involves students from two or more disciplines learning about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcome. The Houston campus event, scheduled 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, April 19, includes 100 physical therapy and nursing students and 20 community practitioners (including alumni), as well as faculty members. After a general introduction of IPE, the students will be divided into 10 smaller groups to work through clinical scenarios, with a practicing physical therapist and nurse in each group to promote conversation among the students.
Suzanne Scheller (Nursing, Houston) and Christina Bickley (Physical Therapy, Houston) are lead facilitators of the project. The event is sponsored by the College of Health Sciences.
