‘Star’ mural to be preserved

The patio building will be razed this summer, but the venerable brick-star mural on its west face will be preserved for future use. Constructed in 1956, the building near Oakland and Third Streets has outlived its usefulness, as maintenance costs have become unsustainable, facilities officials say.

Beginning this month, a masonry specialist will remove the mural in sections, and the artwork will be stored until a new location for it can be determined. The iconic mural, designed by artist and former TWU assistant professor Coreen Mary Spellman, incorporates a star motif using variations of protruding and receding bricks, and is said to have been a nod to her love for Texas.
