Scholarship established in honor of Marjorie Wilbanks Akin

A Dallas law firm has established an annual scholarship in honor of Texas Woman's alumna Marjorie Wilbanks Akin.

Akin graduated from TWU in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Fashion Merchandising. She went on to earn her MBA from the University of Notre Dame and work for Nortel Networks. She married Christopher Akin and had two children, Graham and Amelia. She was an advocate for many charitable causes focusing on eradicating poverty and human trafficking, and also volunteered for the Dallas community schools.

Marjorie Akin passed away in September 2020 after a courageous battle against advanced melanoma. Christopher Akin’s law partners at Lynn Pinker Hurst & Schwegmann created this scholarship in honor of Marjorie and her commitment to education.

This new annual scholarship has received funding for 10 years, beginning in fall 2021, to support a student with financial need. Preference will be given to a student who has had their own struggle with cancer, whether it be a personal battle or a close family member. Texas Woman’s is grateful to Lynn Pinker Hurst & Schwegmann for creating this scholarship honoring Marjorie Akin’s legacy.
